Taboos, Rituals, Potions, and Spells

Big Sam

advertisement

Today a friend mentioned potions and spells and a fun little mini-discussion was started. This got me to thinking about all the little things we do (well some of us anyway), and why we do them. I think just about everyone has superstitions or believes in wives tales. For instance; in my family if one of us has a bad headache we eat a wedge of iceberg lettuce for relief. We don't take acetaminophen or aspirin, we eat lettuce. It works, but why? If my mother is exposed to anyone who is ill, with a cold or sore throat or any such thing; she will immediately start eating sour kraut. She swears this keeps her from catching the virus, and she is never sick. We also practice an old wives tale to get rid of warts…. Of course all we really need to do is allow my mother to touch the wart and it will go away. But there is also the practice of washing the wart with dirty washrag and then bury that rag in the yard, and the wart will go away.

Another example is when one of us moves into a new home, before we bring in any belongings; we go in and open every door and window. Then with a straw broom we sweep out the corners (not touching the floor) of every room and then direct the sweeping out the open doors and windows.

There are taboos in my family too. Don't rock an empty rocky chair, or someone will become ill, injured or worse die. This goes for empty swings and rocking horses too. Don't play in a wheelchair, or you will wind up in one later. And whatever you do, don't say "At least __________didn't happen" or something similar or you will cause whatever bad thing it is to happen. We also tend to believe that all things happen in threes.

We have other cures, talisman, taboos, and rituals that have been passed from generation to generation. So I ask now, for you to share your stories with us. What rituals, or taboos are in your families?

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I have always thought my family is a bit odd, and I might be right. But then again perhaps tehre are others who do the same or similar things, and maybe they know where these habits got their start.

Do you have any family superstitions or such to share?

PS This may not fit the spooky stories group too well, if you would like to delete it that is ok.

I am a firm believer in Karma. Which means that anything mean or ugly thoughts I have have, I iwll never speak them outloud. YOu see spririts hear them, and some of them do not realize that you are just venting and will perhaps do the dastardly deed for you....and then of course you are in deep doo doo my friend!

My girl friend will never talk about money in front of her "money sprirts" who wait only to hear that she has some extra money....and they will then go break something.

Knock on wood, find a penny pick it up and all the day you'll have good luck, theres are things that have stayed with me all my life. If I spill the salt I still toss some over my shoulder....just incase!

I also cannot say anything mean out into the atmosphere, for one never knows who is nearby listening.

What I have learned, is that in your chats wtih your God....if you His help plus the help of your angels, they must be invited into the conversatino with God....they will not listen unless you ask them to.

I'm sure I hve more, right now this is all I can think of......

*smiles*

"find a penny pick it up and all the day you'll have good luck"

That's what I always thought it was too. This last Friday (the 13th no less), I found a penny and picked it up, but my husband said - no it's not heads up, it will be bad luck if you pick it up. Has anyone else heard this part of the superstition? Or is it just him?

I've heard it has to be heads up for good luck but I believe finding it is luck enough. All the money I've found has added up. One time was a $20 at the doorway to a store. People were stepping on it. I just scooped it up and kept walking.

Yes, I've heard that the penny has to be head's up. If it is heads down the luck will all be bad. So he is not the only one.

Mule your right finding any amt of money is lucky. I saw a news report on this guy somewhere that looks for dropped change and makes hundreds of dollars a year; as well as lost a lot of weight doing this.

I have also heard the heads/tails thing about pennies, but I pick up all of them, because, well, I feel sorry for them! It seems that no one wants them, and I think it is sad to be unwanted. So, I pick them up. They all go into my big penny jar, where they can be happy together because each one is now wanted and is made to feel special.

Yeah, I know... I'm probably certifiable, but, well...

sigh...

OMG! I Love That! I have an older sister who as a child would carry home rocks, when asked why she kept all these rocks she explained that she would kick them home, but then couldn't just leave them behind after they let her play, she felt sorry for them.

And I am no better, one day while walking with my mother, (I am an adult at this time) on a rainy day; we stepped over a worm that was lying on the sidewalk. After several steps I had to turn around, go back and move that worm to the edge of the sidewalk so he wouldn't dry up, or get stepped on.

I love that you feel for the pennies, That's great.

Cynthia, true story: my friend and I collected Pokemon toys, and one day we saw a stuffed "Meowth" at a toy store, and it had been damaged. Still, we had one (it was the largest size) on order, so we decided not to buy the damaged one. On the way back, before getting to the checkout counter, we stopped at the Meowth character again. I started to walk past it, but at that moment it literally leaped off the shelf and into the cart!

We bought it.

Cynthia, your son would go ga ga if he saw our Pokemon collection... We have wall-to-wall Pokemon, on shelves, on the floor, on the sofa, in every room... we have dinnerware, linens, toys (of course)... now, I think the funniest thing of all is that we are both 65 years old....

Heck, I even call my car the Pikamobile... Pikachu is my favorite character. We're just suckers for cute, I guess.

Your kid would love our place... you should see the looks in the eyes of trick-or-treaters when we open the door: the first thing they see is a huge 5' tall green alien, then their eyes are drawn to the model horse collection, then the Pokemon, and more Pokemon, and if they get any farther than that (dragging their parents, of course) they will eventually find hundreds of stuffed animals, the whole freakin' collection from the movie, "Cars," and the Harry Potter movies, and "Monsters, Inc.," and on and on and on.... we are pack-rats... and just cannot leave anything behind if it is cute... but we're so frustrated now because we're out of space and have to bypass so much cute stuff...

Yeah. I know. I'm warped...

LOL I bought a stuffed E.T. for my son when the movie came out. It had leathery skin and a little heart light. One time a dog got it and chewed it up pretty good. My son was devastated! He brought it to me crying, and since he'd had it so many years, of course I couldn't find another one. So I tried sewing it up, one of the worst problems it had was its head was almost all the way off because the dog had chewed its neck. I sewed his neck and cut a red bandana to make one his size and got a little cowboy hat, and fixed him up like the kids did in the movie for Halloween. He has quite a few sewn up scars too, but my son is 32 years old and STILL has him!

On the penny thing, we always believed if you found one face down, you picked it up and gave it to someone else, face up. Then that person would have the good luck.

I remember reading an article that said people in India wear masks on the backs of their heads to keep tigers from attacking. Hi Theresa, I too believe in threes. I beleive in white light and meditation. I know that there is a spirit world and that it can be manipulated.

I am bound to my husband and he to me because of a ritual we participated in when we were first in love (it is unbreakable). We are bound for better and for worse. (Be careful what you ask for...you just might get it!)

GetOffMyMountain, I did accept your friend's request...but did some other weird thing, as well. Not exactly sure what.

I also believe in colors for health and general good will. I am also a big fan of Louise Hay, You can heal your life. It tells how our thought can contribute to our illnesses. Still working on changing old thoughts but it is a work in progress. If it were not a work, I'd be a saint:) FAR from that point.

Cynthia Thanks for accepting!!!! Ya I like using green for health, pink for love. I too, am still a work in progress as I have gotten off track several times since the late 70's which is when I got started{ while living in California}. I welcome and love reading all the comments that inform me and remind me of what I should remember or know for the future. I read and read books on the subjects, but I don't retain like I would like to. Now being retired, I have lots of time to catch back up with my favorite subject... metaphysical books.

My family (Catholic) absribe to much of the above and more... walking aroung the outside of the house, sprinkling salt (prefereably rocksalt) to keep away bad/evil spirits; the folk remedies, tarot cards, etc... yet my mother gets highly upset if I point out that though many of these practices are often utilized by Catholics, they are actually wiccan in origin.

Surrounding the house with salt is another one that my family takes part in, I'm not sure any of knew why (until now, thank you). I always assumed it was to keep out bugs.

We are also Catholic, is your family also Irish?

actually, my Mom's family is French... my Dad's side is Irish (Mom & Dad never married... I'm Mom's only child, Dad's oldest of 8--ironically, Mom's the 2nd child of 9, Dad's the 2nd child of 2)

Happy St. Patrick's Day, Theresa, I have some Irish superstitions for you:

A sure way to break a friendship is to hand someone a knife. You just don't give anybody anything that would cut a friendship.

A purse without money in it is never given as a gift, even if it means putting a penny inside. That way it's never an empty purse and will never be.

Never hang a new calendar on the wall before New Year's Day. or you wo't live to see it.

Never walk in the front door of yourhome and then leave out the backor you will be letting the devil roam throughout the house.

Happy St Patrick's Day to you too Teresa.

The empty purse is one that we have always practiced, never give an empty purse (wallet). And I've heard that you'll break a friendship by giving a knife as a gift, but never heard that it was bad to hand someone a knife. So I guess you set the knife on the table and let them pick it up?

I have a good friend who collects knives; and I wanted to give him an athame for his birthday. So I "loaned" him the knife with the agreement that when he is 'finished' with it he will loan it back to me. That got us around the problem, and we are still fast friends.

Theresa, Yes you put the knife down and let them pick it up. Although my Grandma was not Irish the community she lived in had a large Irish population so she followed many of the same superstitions(her way). If she had a gift that was sharp she would place the package on the table and ask the intended recipient if they would like to buy it for a nickel. She never did put a tag or card on a sharp gift but she did not mind giving the nickel and getting it back again. It is fun to think about these things. Here's to hoping you have bubbles in your tea(bubbles floating on top of the hot tea in your cup means you will be coming into some money).

            Hi Theresa

Cool article and you have some that I've never heard of. About the only ones I can think of is the throwing salt over the shoulder; walking under a ladder is bad luck; don't sweep floors after dark as evil comes into house when you open the door to sweep the dirt out, that sort of thing.

PR...I'd like to know more about your "ritual" binding you and your husband....sounds very interesting.

Spirits, karma, white light, etc.....yes! Yes!

I enjoy reading tarot cards (though I'm not very good at it) and have had my palm read, astrology done and find wicca to be fascinating but hard to sometimes find certain herbs, etc. Just yesterday I drank some thyme tea for a cough, then tried to read the tea leaves....lol...again I don't really know how, but would like to learn.

The movie, The Serpent and the Rainbow fascinates me with the use of the powders (herbs I'm sure) that can induce the mind/body like that as well as the "power of suggestion" and all.

This is great! I'll see if I can think of anything else and post back.

            *smiles*

            Hi Tumbleweed,

Thanks for coming by and joining us. I've heard about not sweeping at night, though I still do. The sweeping out the corners of a new home (and in the spring) is to sweep out the negative energy that builds up in a house. So it makes sense there is an opposite.

A lot of herbs can be found online (be careful many are toxic). I have always personally believed that thle local flora is best. Just pick up a book on local flora, to learn about each plants qualities or attributes. Pay attention to what animals, birds, and bugs like the plants, and what they do with them. By doing this you can determine the best uses for that plant for yourself.

For instance, around here squirrels like to use nice green maple leaves to line their nests; They spend a lot of time gathering the leaves and then deftly fold them like folding a sheet (it is wonderful to watch). So this is providing warmth and comfort for the squirrel; adding maple leaves to a floral arrangement for the house or a wreath for the door, should invite warmth and comfort to your home.

My mother always had a "spiritual advisor"....the time that sticks with me and has made me a believer over the years is :

The year I was 13, my my grandfather passed away. 2 weeks later my cousin passed away. He was only 6 years old. He had spina-bifida and hydrocephalus (the advances in caring for this birth defect has been amazing by the way)....

My mother had not been to see her advisor in months and decided she needed to go ..she was hoping for some contact some words of comfort....

I was sitting in the waiting room with her. This woman (very average looking older woman, very nice, the house was nice too...just a normal house....I was a bit disappointed, I was hoping for the long skirt, scarf tied about the head, lots of jewelry ...etc...lol)....walked into the room, took one look at my mother and said "Your daddy died"

My mother's eyes filled with tears...and off they went into another room.

When Mom came out, I asked her what that lady had told her....

            she said:

Well, she said....that Grampa had to go to heaven before Johnny, because Johnny didn't know anyone there, and Grampa had to be there to meet him.

The rest, while interesting, did not have the impact on me that this did.

I believe some people have a gift.

I think, not so much buried as never developed, and I think everybody has it. I have a lot of "power" in a sense, but I never learned to develop it (per se), so I sometimes make mistakes with it, but to myself not anyone else. We always smoke/smudge our homes with sage(to chase out any negativity/evil) then sweet grass (to invite positive/clean spirits back in). Any new furniture, bedding etc. When someone has lived there then left. I know there are others too, but I will have to think awhile. Oh, and making sure your shoes are always set as if you are wearing them, so you don't get crooked feet, and always make sure the pillowcase opening faces out to the edge of the bed(instead of toward the middle), so if you should die in your sleep, your soul can escape and not be trapped. Those are VERY old.

I just love the smell of sweet grass, in the summers here there are certain places where that aroma is strong and I can stay there for hours upon hours just breathing it in.

The pillowcase thing reminds me of my sister who is an RN who works in nursing homes. She says there are a lot of cna's who will tie knots in the patients sheets (at the foot of the bed) so they won't die on their shift. Apparently the knots tie the patient to this world. My sister always unties the knots.

I bought my house in '05,...6 months later my marriage broke up.....it was not a baad thing...I went hungry and cold most of the time to keep this house.....but I did it,and it was worth it. I'm not sure there is negative energy in this house, but.....I am of the belief that it certainly cant hurt to be sure!

Well Sara, I think your house has a whole BUNCH of really good, strong energy from your ability to live through the tough times in that house! GOOD FOR YOU!

My ceremony: Open the back door. Burn the sage while walking counter clock wise, three times around the house, through every room, talking to whatever you believe, asking to have all bad removed from the house. Close the back door, open the front door, burn the sweet grass or some other incense and walk clockwise around the house asking for all the good to be brought into the house.

There is really no wrong way to do a ceremony, so make it your own.

            Enjoy!

            @ #6.9

I would only add that I "purify" my body, mind, and spirit before doing this ritual. Start with a clean body (shower/bathe) and clothes (or a robe or even nude if you want). Then after lighting the sage in the shell "bowl", using both hands "pull" the smoke toward your body (you've seen them do this in movies I'm sure)....doing the whole body, under arms and all. Clear your mind and relax. THEN, once I am "pure", I go on through the house. That's just the way I do it....you can do your own ritual, as said.

Tumbleweed, you are correct there. It is very important that you cleanse yourself first, always. Also, for my beliefs anyway, no alcohol for 24 hours before cleansing. But that is just our native american belief. Tobacco is okay (meaning if you are a smoker) because tobacco is also used in many rituals. Don't know about pot, but I think any mind/body altering substance should be out of your system.

I do believe in what goes around comes around . When you treat someone badly ..the bad comes back to you.

We do have a deck of Tarot cards and I bring them out sometimes but I think of them like I do reading my horoscope. Its interesting but not always right.

Great Article I enjoyed reading it ツ

Great article! I believe the energy that connects us all gives us the ability to understand things about each other. I.e. intuition. I think we had to develop it when we were still hunter/gatherers and didn't yet have a spoken language.

I can also be very supersitious. Some say it is because I am a Sagitarius. Could be. I don't know that any of use can know all that happens around us and I don't really disbelieve anything. Just some beliefs don't seem to feel right to me.

I am not at all catholic, but I MUST have my St. Jude medal. He is the patron saint of lost causes and I was one when I drank and used drugs. AND I have always had a job when waring the medal. When I gave my old one to someone, I was out of work for a year! I got a job just a week after getting a new medal. Yes, it could just be a coincidence...but it works for me.

When I move into a new house, I follow a Native American ritual where I burn sage. And whenever I feel the house is holding too much bad energy, I do it again...I feel a ceremony coming on this weekend:)

And I don't do any kind of Tarot or future stuff. I don't want to know!

I was wondering if sage scented candles would work as well? I love the smell of the mixed sage-lavender scents.

BTW, would it be okay to clip this to Pagan Tea House?

I personally would have to say (not that I am a know it all), that the candle is not the same. If you don't have any shops and can't order online, (I don't know where you live), I have gathered my own sage (around here there is alot). I give a gift of tobacco (scattering it on the ground around the plants) and look for the oldest looking plant (one of the grandfathers). I tie into a bundle (or two) with red thread and thank the plant for its gift. Then hang it to dry at home for a few weeks. If you live anywhere near an Indian Reservation, or a place where pow wows are held, there is usually places/people where it can be purchased.

I don't know about using a candle for a ceremony,(it is the smoke that the bad spirits cling to and float away with,) but we know that scents can be relaxing, uplifting, etc. so if they help you feel better, do it.

When I lived in So. Cal. (Whittier), I had so many plants I couldn't count them all! I have never had such nice plants since, and nowhere near as many. Don't know what the big difference is, but it's true.In fact, I only have two plants now, one is a spider plant(25 years old), and one is (wow, I can't remember the name of it.........it is 23). Anyway I lost my "indoor" green thumb when I moved from California and developed an "outdoor" green thumb instead. Oh well, long as I can still grow Something! LOL

I didn't think of that, Theresa, suppose that COULD be true. It's just that all my other ones keep dying, and that's pretty depressing after awhile. I have books and stuff to help me out, but it just doesn't seem to matter. These two I have, they are old, but they hang in there for me for some reason. My house gets lots of light and is usually at about 68* to 72*, so I can't figure it out. Outdoors, in Spring, summer, and fall, I have tons of flowers from Iris, to roses, to Glads, to lavender, and up to last year when I couldn't do as much, I had a big food garden as well. I'm just kind of stumped as to why thumb changed from indoor to outdoor.

I have quite a few house plants, and they are spread around the house in but in groups. I don't think there is a plant that sits alone anywhere. Also when I buy new plants I always put them in a grouping, never alone.

Do you live near a road, or something that increases the dust in your home? dust on the leaves can suffocate the plants, so I dust them with a featherduster, almost everyday.

I don't care for gardening, but my son and nephew both work on the yard so I have wonderful landscaping to enjoy without any of the work. I just get to go out and sit by the koi pond and relax.... I'm so spoiled.

It is spring, time to clear the house of all the negativity that has built up in winter tight homes. "spring cleaning" is more than just beating out the rugs and cleaning out the garage. Doesn't seem to unusual that we all feel it is time again to smudge, or sweep out our homes.

My grandmother used to tell me never to let anyone else drink from my glass, or they'd know what I'm thinking.

Every once in a while we'll "read" coffee grounds after having had some Turkish coffee. You turn the mostly-empty coffee cup upside down, let it dry, and "read" the patterns/shapes in the coffee residue. Never done on Sundays, apparently very bad luck.

KJakers, another good thing if a person doesn't have a lintel or door frame is make a small bundle (I use red felt and red thread) about the size around, but 1/2 the length, of the index finger. A little sage, tobacco and sweet grass(just cut from the braid) that can be fastened by just a thumbtack in the top right corner of the door area(or whichever side your door opens on).

Yes, you can use sagebrush as well, I do anyway. It has worked just as well for me. I go to a large patch of it and sprinkle tobacco on the ground and ask which plant wants to give some of itself to me. Then I clip off as much as I want, bundle it with red thread and let it dry. (say thank you as well). Any type of sage you choose will do its job for you.

One I've always followed is that the bed has to face south. I have had a couple dreams come true. There are symbols in my dreams that I may not recognise right away but when they come true it makes sense. If I could get my mind to still there's no telling what would come in.

Do you know why the bed is supposed to face south? I have heard that if the head of the bed is to the east you will sleep better, but no explanation as to why.

If Dad told me I don't remember but it might have to do with magnetic flow, north to south. If the bed faced the east you would rise with the sun, that would make sense. but if it faced the west you would have the sun in your eyes as you tried to sleep. I also want to face the bedroom door.

I think this is a Feng Shui thing and has to do with locating the "positive chi" in the room. Also, I was always told that you don't want the foot of the bed in direct line up with the door as that means "death"....so put it at an angle or so it lines up off to the side of the doorway somehow, you should still be able to face the doorway. :-)

South?....my grandmother always said your front door should face the south....I always thought because of weather conditions, but now I'm wondering???? :-)

You also say that you believe some people have a gift. I believe everybody has the gift, just only some learn how to recognize it and use it.

There are also some that use it without control (it just seems to happen randomly).

This scares some people so they suppress it and it gets buried or blocked.

Sometimes we would like to have it back just to explore and study it, and see if it was real or just our imagination.

My ex does the sage thing. I think it's time my house got re-saged but she lives in another State now so I guess I'll have to do it myself, or find someone else to do it (I think maybe it works better if a woman does it).

(I think maybe it works better if a woman does it).

Personally, I don't think it would matter. It's a "purification" thing, to purge the 'bad' energy out and 'cleanse' so the 'good' can come in, and so I don't see any reason why you couldn't do it....but I'm no expert here. Let's see what the "pro's" say about it.

BTW...Friend request accepted. Thank you. :-)

Actually, the thing about having a woman do is just an excuse. It's really that I would feel silly doing it. And someone with a little more belief in it would probably be more effective.

            Gary,

The medicine men do ceremonies as often as the medicine women do. May start by just burning some sage in an ash tray. You don't have to walk about the house with it.

Perhaps you could do it in private when you're home alone? But don't feel silly doing it because like Cynthia said in 14.3....the medicine men would/did do it. :-)

Good luck with however you decide to it.

GaryO, it is effective whether done by a man or a woman. When you do it, here are some rules : 1. Make sure your body is clean (shower, bath, etc.) 2. Do not drink alcohol for at least 24 hours before (no "spirits" in your system). 3. Use matches, not a lighter (even if you have to light it several times). 4. Acknowlege all good in the world, thanking our ancestors that we are here due to them. 5.(people do this differently) I personally go into each room of the house, opening all cupboards, drawers, closets, etc. Starting with the East corner of each room with my prayers and thanks, then clockwise to each of the other directions, south, west, north (north is the cold, dark area where these bad spirits are exiled.) Do every room first with sage (this chases out the negative), then do it all again the very same way with the sweet grass (this invites all the good and benevolence back into the home). It may sound a little time consuming, especially if it is a big house, but I believe it is more than worth the time. Everone who comes into my home says they can "feel" love and hominess and warmth. (even when the house is a mess, which is frequently! LOL) Even my weird cats seem to settle down after a good "cleansing" (that in itself is a miracle). Good luck and good love in your attempts, all DOES count. Bless. *Gail*

I don't know of any house around these parts that has basement. We have micro quakes several times a day. You don't really feel most of them, but I imagine they would play havoc with basement walls.

The next time I go to the garden center, I am going to get some sage. When we are going down the freeway some evenings, I can smell the wild sage and it smells so good. But I don't think the Chippies would like for me to stop and gather any! :)

A mess? My dogs bring so much junk and dirt in I can't keep my house clean, not to worry about just messy. And shedding ... I've got dog fur all over the place. Vacuum, sweep and it's building up before I'm even done.

GaryO, Cats are the same, especially if they go outdoors a lot. Their fur is adjusted to being outside (thicker), so when they come in, too warm, they shed all over the place! I have big rolls of tape, pull off strips and go over everything, even then can't seem to get it all! LOL
